A place mat to help little ones set the table

So I found some amazing Montessori type cloth place mats with the place setting beautifully sewed on, but I just couldn't bring myself to spend over $20 on one place mat. Especially when I knew it would have to be cleaned and washed and would be used into pieces. So here is my go at it. I got a large piece of stiff felt and 4 different colored pieces of softer felt at Hobby Lobby, and some fabric glue. Add a sharpie and some scissors, and voila!

Mr. T has his own special plate and bowl (Walmart is great for cheap ceramic dishes) since he sometimes wipes his dishes off the table in an effort to clean his place. And he has toddler silverware. I used his pieces for the templates so they would match up perfectly.

All glued together. I like it! It has to dry overnight, but I'm thinking I'll either Scotch Guard  it a few dozen times, or make a sleeve of clear vinyl or laminate type material so it can be wiped easily. So we have a fully functional place setting place mat for under $5. And I have left over felt to make story board characters with!

The finished mat with all the pieces in place! If you have a great practical life post, please leave a comment and share the link! We love sharing great ideas!
